Listen to TERMINALS in its entirety on WNYC's New Sounds Live Q2:
TERMINALS is an evening-length work of five concertos for improviser and percussion ensemble, featuring the SO Percussion group. Each piece will feature a different improviser in a setting composed specifically for them. The soloists include John Medeski, Zeena Parkins, DJ Olive, Jen Shyu, and Bobby Previte.

"I have been interested in architecture, particularly that of airports, since childhood. I used to arrange random objects into my own 'airports,' and as teenagers we would sometimes sneak onto the Niagara Falls Airport runway at night, lie down on the grass, and watch as the jets roared over us at takeoff.

Later in percussion school I remember being keenly aware of the real (and the implied) architecture in the placement of the instruments. In many works, placement is meticulously detailed and is a visual element integral to the piece (Stockhausen's 'Zyklus' and much of the work of Harry Partch come to mind).

Now, as an adult sitting in the plane on my way to a concert, I find myself opening the seat pocket magazine and staring at the architectural diagrams of airport terminals, the airport 'terminal maps.' I am fascinated with their graphic representations of these transient spaces that now regularly inhabit my life. These are my cathedrals."
